“As for the Sitwells, though I paid 3/6 to hear Edith vociferate her poems, accompanied by a small & nimble orchestra, through a megaphone, I understood so little that I could not Judge.”
(Virginia Woolf in Virginia Woolf and the Raverats)

About Clear Press

Clear Press Ltd, whose main imprint is Clear Books, publishes and sells books of distinction for well-defined niche markets.

By using the Internet to put books before their niche audiences, Clear Press will succeed where others fail.

William Pryor has been developing Clear Press since 2002. A great-great grandson of Charles Darwin, William has been involved in most aspects of the book trade in the last 30 years: bookselling (with Bowes & Bowes in Cambridge, Chapter & Verse and his own Cosmic Books in Devon), book distribution (as co-founder in the 1980's of Airlift Book Company), publishing (his Sky Books in the late eighties was a prototype for Clear Press) and writing (a widely published poet in the sixties, William has just completed a memoir of those times: The Survival of the Coolest).

The book publishing industry has, in recent years, like the music industry, seen increased consolidation by a few multinational operations: titles published by traditional publishers are increasingly 'safe' and mass market. Since the demise of the net book agreement, bookshops pin their profitability on high volume sales and heavy discounting, and small independent publishers are finding it increasingly difficult to persuade chain booksellers to stock their titles.

Clear Books concentrates on titles that appeal to readily identifiable special interest groups. The Company's Guerrilla Interactive Memetic Marketing Engine (or GIMME) identifies and maps niche markets anywhere in the world for any given title. Search engine technology and statistical analysis means GIMME can identify the virtual locations of interest groups likely to buy a book. A range of methods are then used to market the books to those groups.

Jim Bishop

It's a fascinating and, of course, unique book.
Peter Kettle

The publication of these letters in one volume brings into focus an unusually compassionate aspect of Virginia Woolf. Jacques Raverat's lucid, unsentimental letters to Woolf are dictated to his wife, the artist Gwen, as he is dying in France. Very moving, they are a compelling read.
(Henrietta Garnett, great niece of Virginia Woolf and author of Family Skeletons)
